Brookfield is a wonderful, eclectic, intermingling gang of good folks. These good folks are spread out over about 40 sq. miles of some really stunning countryside (even in mud season). This countryside encompasses 5 very distinct neighborhoods: Brookfield Center – once the hub of this thriving little metropolis - heading towards Randolph Center; East Hill – those folks along and off RT 14 and up the mountain towards Chelsea; Bear Hill which is west above the village looking off to Northfield and south to Killington; Pond Village – now, the new "hub" of Brookfield and the folks living around Sunset Lake and the floating bridge, and in the way back of yonder is West Brookfield off RT 12 - hanging out more toward Braintree and Randolph than Brookfield. So, there you have it - the geography of the 1800 or so folks and the 40 or so gazillion critters living around here.
In the midst of all this, in Pond Village, is the Brookfield Bed & Breakfast. We’re not a very big operation – just a small, 3-room B & B with the best front porch in Central Vermont! It’s a good old-fashion verandah – and screened in too! What a wonderful, lazy place to have breakfast, claim a rocker and just do nothing at all. As we often feel – a good place to renew, chat with neighbors as they pass by or enjoy the quiet view of the brook across the road and the chance sighting of our neighborhood fox (there are 3 this year) and the young buck who wanders thru in the early morn. We’re often told how comfortable our rooms are. We enjoy having people visit our home and offering them a brief change of life-style along with providing the amenities we know will give our guests a fun and relaxing time. We also have an 1890’s "summer cottage" just up the road we often share with guests with younger children. Our B&B is a cure for pomposity and an invitation to enjoy life from a fresh perspective.
Now, about our breakfast food – it’s just plain yummy. It’s mostly local – from the small, productive farms in and around Brookfield. We’re great promoters of this local talent. And, you, our guests, are the fortunate benefactors!
Tucked in the hills and glens all around Brookfield are some industrious and creative folks. We’ve everything from a modern-day mega dairy farm to a small 10 acre farm of a couple of sheep along with a few chickens.
With the recent demise of so many dairy farms, we’re delighted to report there’s a resurgence of farming – of a slightly diverse nature. The small, family farm is having a rebirth. There are many variations on this theme of mostly organic farming. We’ve a bee farm (apiary), meat, chickens, pigs and horse farms. A local goat farm makes an award winning caramel sauce beginning with their goats’ milk. Apple and berry seasons offer outstanding fare as well. There’s an apple orchard down the road offering "pick your own" each fall. The variety of flowers and herbs offered is mind-boggling. Because of the rich Vermont soil – the veggie farms make visits to local farmer’s market a treat. Of course, one need make no comment about our supreme Vermont maple syrup. Having fresh farm eggs (brown, of course) DELIVERED to your kitchen door for $2/doz is the most amazing luxury – not to mention a moment to share in gathering local gossip. We’re lucky to report these farms are hanging in - establishing themselves with incredibly hard work, unmitigated dedication – in spite of the few …"oh, my God, why am I doing this" - and some very savvy marketing.
This brings you to our message. If you would like to spend some really interesting, even educational and fun time, working on a farm for a day, a week or just a self-guided walk-thru – we hope you'll contact us and let us help you arrange your visit to this nifty little nook in Vermont.
Links to all the farms in the "Floating bridge Food & Farms Cooperative" will be posted very soon.
